Social Media is the transformation of the internet. We used to use the web to go out and find information. While we still do, we now use the web to interact. No longer are brochure websites the norm. We've got videos, blogs, chat boxes, Pandora... social networks. Back in the day it was "dorky" to create an AOL Member Profile... now you're a dork if you aren't on Facebook or Twitter.

As it all relates to business... I think in about five more years, it will be vital to have that online presence and if you don't start now, you're gonna be screwed.

I'll be the first to admit that when I log on I probably waste some real valuable time, but it is no different than "water-cooler" talk at the office.

I think Social Media is our next Industrial Revolution. Old media (TV, Newspapers, Magazines) OUT... independent broadcasters (like ThriveAmerica) IN.

That's my dos pesos

I learn toward what Joan posted. I think social media is just that -- an old-fashioned "ice-cream social" if you will that happens to take place across all differnet types of "new" electronic media channels. Ultimately, it's about meeting people that hopefully you like, share useful information with, want to spend time with, etc. Businesses that are having success at tapping into social media have real people having real conversations about real things. Just like you would at an ice-cream social...just without the ice cream.

Social Media Marketing is a very complex issue and success is related to the quality of your content and the consistency in your branding - it can hurt you as much as it can help you, so doing it the correct way is very important. If you are a speaker looking to spread your face-to-face activities to the web using web technologies, this is an excellent approach that is taking hold now. I encourage you to check out our eWorkshopHosting.com site to learn more about this approach. Also, blogging is good, but is becoming old hat - video is the way to go, so talk to Brent about combining video with your blogs!

Social media are all the online social networks, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo and more. They also include blogging and chats. The main point is to create relationships with people, learn who they are and what they enjoy. Some social media are more "social" than others. For example Facebook is more social than LinkedIn which is more professional. But, all are designed to hook people up who wouldn't have otherwise met.

The social media used properly can be an excellent business tool. But, just like email when it first entered the scene, the social media must be monitored and must have some parameters. Dell, Amazon, Zappos are a few companies who are making good use of the social media.

These tools are the next generation in communication. We'd better learn to embrace them!

BTW, I'm writing a book, The New Handshake, Sales Meets Social Media.

Some politicians use blogs to keep their constituents informed; entertainers use blogs to keep their fans informed; and corporate CEOs do the same for their employers, clients, and investors. Blogs and other social media have become the modern-day equivalent of the Fireside Chat.

Thanks Andrew! Quick question... As a college student are there are companies that you think have reached to you successfully using social media... i.e. blogs, facebook, twitter, etc.?
