A meditation on thriving in a down economy and beyond.
Produced by Blank Stage Productions, ThriveAMERICA is a show that attracts top business success leaders willing to share their experience, strength and hope so that we may all learn how to thrive in this economy. We recently asked Snelling Staffing franchise owner, Larkin Dailey, to visit the set as a guest to talk to us about how a company may benefit from leveraging the services of a professional staffing and recruitment firm to save them time and avoid mistakes.
Meet Larkin Dailey. Larkin owns a franchise of Snelling Staffing, a staffing and recruitment firm that services the metro Atlanta area. Larkin has been active in the industry for over 15 years and recently received a WBENC certification as a woman owned business. Larkin sits on the board of directors for the Georgia Association of Personnel Services (GAPS) and each year is awarded top national honors from Snelling.
It was an honor to have Larkin visit the set of ThriveAMERICA and share her expertise with us. Larkin introduces our audience to five powerful ways that companies can leverage the services of a staffing and recruiting service to their benefit. Like mine, I think your eyes will be opened to the many solutions a professional staffing service can bring to the table.
.
To answer click on the “Comment” icon next to the video player
1. What are some creative ways you might use a professional staffing and recruiting service?
2. Why might a company need a staffing and recruitment company?
3. What separates some firms from others?
.
FIVE to THRIVE: step 1
Alacarte or Unbundled Services
Consider companies that offer Alacarte or unbundled services. That means they can do any part of the hiring process for you that makes sense. It does not have to be all or nothing. Some companies will use a recruiting firm strictly to do skill assessments for candidates they may consider on their own. Some recruiting functions that a company may want to consider outsourcing would be background checks, drug tests, credit checks, reference checks, resume screening, conducting initial interviews, payrolling and more. For example, now is a time where companies are receiving hundreds and hundreds of resumes for any one job opening. That gets to be quite a cumbersome and time-consuming process to sift through them all. You can hire a staffing firm to screen resumes for you and present to you just a handful that meet your minimum criteria while you take it from there. There are flat fees for this type of service and it enables you to limit your costs and cut down on time wasted. We all know that time is money. A staffing company can also have buying power and can cost less than when you try to do some of these things on your own.
.
FIVE to THRIVE: step 2
Flexibility
Many companies have downsized their corporate recruiters or even HR departments completely, depending on the size of the company. You can take advantage of utilizing specialized temporary employees as needed and it’s a variable cost. It often doesn’t make sense to recruit and hire someone just to get some work caught up for a short period of time. Hire only for what you really need, whether it’s a project, fiscal year end, seasonal or just a pile of papers needing to be filed away. It’s not a fixed cost like a normal employee would be. Flexibility is key in this economy. You want to only pay for the extra help as you need it and staffing firms can provide you with quality, skilled employees that have very specific skillsets and industry experience.
.
FIVE to THRIVE: step 3
Payrolling
Some companies may not understand how “payrolling” an employee differs from using a payroll service. Payrolling makes sense when you identify candidates on your own but don’t want them on your payroll. The staffing firm is the employer of record which means they handle the taxes, unemployment, workers comp, government compliance, record retention and more. We’ve had some clients who are bringing back retired employee, employees who have been previously laid off or maybe you just want to bring in someone you found on your own for some summer help. It may not make sense to bring such people onto your payroll so consider running them through a staffing firm’s payroll. Also, if you want to assess an employee’s potential to “fit” into the company culture, you can payroll them for as little or as long as you like until you have a comfort level with that employee or until they have fulfilled their probationary period. There is no time obligation for this service. This leaves your company with only having to pay the staffing company invoice and nothing more!
.
.
.
FIVE to THRIVE: step 4
Experience/Reputation
Seek out staffing firms with a solid reputation and experience. You want to work with staffing and recruiting professionals who can quickly understand your needs and match them to the right candidates. It’s not only about the matching skills and qualifications but your more experience recruiters understand that a cultural fit is equally, if sometimes more, important. Work with credible and reputable staffing companies and search firms. Consider doing business with a member of the Ga Association of Personnel Services. Being a member of and supporting your state association shows your dedication to uphold the ethics of the industry and that the placement firm is receiving ongoing updates and information about staffing laws and trends. This is so they can protect a client company and bring them the most value of a consultative approach. A good staffing and recruiting company will always look out for their client’s best interest.
.
FIVE to THRIVE: step 5
Taxes and Liability
Some companies that have not worked with a staffing firm before may not have a true understanding of how it works. The staffing firm handles everything and can take the burden off your shoulders, that is the payroll burden! For any temporary employee, the staffing company covers the payroll taxes, state and federal unemployment, workers comp, government compliance and more all for an hourly rate. There are limited legal liabilities as well since the client company is not the employer of record. It can be a buffer of protection for a client company.

I enjoyed listening to Larkin’s discussion about the value of staffing and recruiting firms. As companies continue to become “lean and mean” they continue to outsource HR functions such as recruiting. It just makes sense for many forward-thinking employers.
Richard Kirby, Career Coach
August 11th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Thanks, Richard. So many companies don’t realize the benefit of staffing firms during these times. It really does make sense to outsource certain functions of the recruiting process if not the entire process.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:09 am
Larkin, I truly learned a lot by listening to your interview. I will consider a staffing company next time I need to hire someone.
