Thanks guys for all your input and comments! Pretty soon I will be hosting a ThriveAMERICA segment just for actors!

We plan on interviewing acting professionals (kids, teens, and adults), parents of young actors, talent agents, producers, directors, casting directors, acting teachers, writers, and models. Is there any other industry professional that can help an actor thrive that you would like advice from?

Thanks again!

Karli,
You are amazing!! It is so great to hear these concepts reaffirmed by a working professional. What so many actors don't understand is that there are tools to practice available to you right down the road!! Community theatre is a great way to get experience, work on audition techniques, and learn to work with other actors and different directors. No matter what I have done, in every stage production, student film, and professional class I have learned something new and important. There is something to learn from every teacher out there no matter how experienced you may be. You are so right to say YOU HAVE TO STAY SHARP!! Staying fresh is vital to every actor's career. Acting Is Doing!!!

On scams, it is horrible to think that there are people out there who prey on our hopes and dreams, but it is true...If you go to an open call and they charge you for it...run...if you go to an audition and they tell you that in order to be cast, you should attend their class, which they are offering at a discounted rate of just $?...run...the only thing you should pay for is the service of being trained. At no other time should you pay for anything...certainly not a role in their latest prodution. I hate to see scams!! So, when you find someone genuine, kind, and gifted like Karli in this industry, treasure it, because they are few and far between.

I agree with Karli, it's detrimental to avoid scams and to market yourself. Acting is a serious profession just as any other. It takes a lot of work, dedication, diligence, and passion.

Aspiring actors should also remember that it's not as easy as it looks. You have to invest in yourself!

This is a response to Michael...I think you should definitely use the extra elective for drama. If its something you like doing and your good at it how are you going to find out if you don't try. Its never to late to start acting. Morgan Freeman didn't get his first part until his 40's I think. You also don't need alot of money to be good or get into the industry. There is support in many forms including scholarships for classes and furthering your education. Don't give up if its really something you want to do. I learned a long time ago if you want something you have to chase it. It won't fall into your lap. MAKE ACTING HAPPEN!

Hey Wendy!

I will chime in here. In working with Karli she loves to see supportive parents. I think it is like anything else. If you support Sarah and she REALLY wants to do more then go for it. Acting is such a weird thing, but if you can take her to get some ice cream after an audition that she may have not gotten then she will learn a lot from that. Are their agencies where you are that you could consider? Does she have a good headshot? ~ Brent

Great interview! As Karli said in her interview, audition, audition audition..... and I totally agree. I just auditioned myself for The Mousetrap at the community theatre. But, my daughter(7), Sarah, LOVES it. The Sleeping Beauty just closed this past weekend and she played Briar Rose's Cat, Cezanne. She got the role after 64 other kids her age auditioned. She was on stage most of the show. So.... she is a little talent in the making. But......... we have been asked to submit a headshot to a talent agency for film/commercials and I just am not confident/sure how I feel about that. The plays are fun, she loves it, is loved and her confidence level is high. I have seen what child actors, who are popular, become and I don't like it. For us, it is not the money, but Sarah having a learning, growing experience in whatever 'activity' we put her in. I have met some parents who want to 'make it big' with their kids and they make me sick. I guess my main question for you both is, should this be a journey that I take Sarah on or keep her in the theatre as a child? Please be honest, Brent, you know that I respect you and will take your advise to heart because you have seen both sides of this industry.

Thanks- Wendy
