Shomit - excellent point! I hope Larry chimes in here...

Larry might say; text coupons would replace regular coupons... and as less and less people are actively checking email, texting will become the next big thing to reach your target audience, plus it's green - no paper and that's just sexy. Larry told us that the open rate on a text is dramatically higher then on an email.

Like with any new marketing campaign - start SMALL - test and measure. Or so I've been told...

Text message coupons are an interesting concept, but speaking as someone who works in retail, I feel they undermine the point of coupons, which is to bring customers into the store.

Our bookstore, as well as other retailers, send out coupons by e-mail which customers then print out and bring into the store. Sometimes a customer will just pull up the e-mail coupon on his iPhone or Blackberry, and as a courtesy we will usually accept it, but of course we prefer it when customers bring printed coupons.

If we started sending out coupons by text message, we might as well give everyone a discount and do away with coupons altogether.

The target of our coupons are not people who are already in the store, shopping, but rather people at home.
